About the Project
INDUSTRY: Consumer Non-Durables
OPPORTUNITY: NIKE, Inc. fosters a culture of invention. They create products, services and experiences for today’s athlete while solving problems for the next generation. Their mission is to “Bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world. *If you have a body, you are an athlete.” Since it’s inception in 1964, they have become the world’s largest supplier of athletic shoes and apparel and a major manufacturer of sports equipment. They currently employ almost 70,000 team members worldwide.
OUTCOME: NikeLab was a newly formed team focused to reuse current ideas and designs and reinvent them into something fresh, quality-driven and trendsetting. This highly creative and analytical team were looking for innovative ways to build trust and connection among the Leaders and the team as a whole. We co-designed a 1.5 day team retreat offsite at a cabin that hosts 30 team members. We started with a session that defined what is most important to each individual (core values) as well as their strengths using StrengthsFinder 2.0. The whole group integrated their personal core values and strengths and created team core values and strengths together. It became immediately clear how each person supported the group and what areas they could strengthen to be a stronger team. They ended day 1 making pizza from scratch using their creative skills. Day 2 focused on honing their communication skills through a friendly Lego building competition followed by a visioning exercise that challenged the team to come up with clear strategic goals and inspired actions that would elevate the team for the coming year.
LEARNING: When you take the team away from the office, it will create space for more creativity and team building. Our session was combined with outdoor social activities that allowed the team to relax and get comfortable for deep reflections and conversations. When you design a session for a very creative team, it is imperative to provide opportunities that supports the conceptual and analytical brain preferences. We are so grateful to have had the privilege of partnering with the NikeLab team.
