SPARKner Spotlight – Myla Bicol

Describe your dream project.

It was always clear that I wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives, especially the children in the Philippines. From a series of charity works through my passion in giving back, it led me to form a non-governmental organization, Alexa Mira Society Inc, named after my daughter.  This allowed me to continue to give back to the community.

The ultimate dream project for me is to build a facility for:

*Single mothers in crisis and needing comprehensive care. To help them make a wise decision not just for themselves but also for their babies and hopefully prevent abortion.

*To provide a nutrition program to fight malnutrition for children between ages 1 to 5 years old during the critical stage of brain development and to prevent brain stunting and wasting.

Part of my dream project is to continue to provide scholarships to destitute children in the community and to have a series of gift giving also for the indigent children in the community.

What are your core values and purpose and how do they align with your dream project?

My core values are Family, Love, Giving.  My purpose is to make a difference.

Being the youngest of 9 children and immigrated to Canada when I was 12, I came to realize just how fortunate I was to grow up in Canada.  The yearly ritual of buying school supplies overwhelmed me as I was used to buying 1 sheet of paper every day on my way to school.  I said to myself one day I am going to give back to the community where I grew up.

That day came in October 2006, where were given the opportunity give school supplies to over 2000 children at Pasing Elementary in the Philippines.  It was at that moment, I knew my life purpose was to make a difference in our communities.

What life lesson do you want to share with others?

Self-confidence plays a big part and with self-confidence came courage. When you are living your purpose, everything in life falls into place.

My wish is for my SPARKners to follow your dreams no matter how big or small they can be. Anything is possible. Always be grateful, because gratitude equals opportunity and happiness. Know your values to live a very happy life and know your purpose to live a fulfilling life.
